Rules and Regulations



ART. 1: ORGANIZATION
The 2nd ULTIMA FRONTERA 160 is organized by TEAM AXARSPORT s.l. and will take place from October 20 to 21, 2012 in Andalucia, Spain.

ART. 2: DEFINITION OF THE COMPETITION
The 2nd ULTIMA FRONTERA 160 is a single-stage ultra-marathon of 3 different race distances (54km/80km/160km) in Southern Spain. There are tough climbs (54km: +- 1,740m; 80km: +-2,200m; 160km: +-4400m) and technical trails in the beautiful October weather of Andalucia.
The race is self-supported. Competitors carry obligatory items ( see complete Equipment List, ART. 19 ). This includes food/energy bars, gels, and a minimum of 1.5 litres of water (provided), excluding any pre-mixed electrolyte drinks.

ART. 3: REGISTRATION, ENTRY FEES, AND ADMINISTRATIVE OBLIGATIONS
The total cost of entry is variable, depending on whether you enroll as an individual or as a team.

Entry fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. In the event of a competitor canceling due to medically supported injury / illness, he / she can pass the entry fee to another person.


ART. 4: GENERAL CONDITIONS & PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY
The 2nd ULTIMA FRONTERA 160 will be administered according to the general race regulations and their amendments, to which all participants agree when they register. The organization is not responsible for any damage caused by the participant or caused to themselves by their imprudence or negligence. Similarly the participants declare they are in perfect physical condition to perform this race, exempting the organizers of the race from said responsibility. Enrollment in the race assumes the acceptance of these rules and regulations.

ART. 5: CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION FOR PARTICIPANTS
Anyone meeting the following conditions will be accepted: over 18, any citizenship, good health, and complete payment of fees.

ART. 6: CATEGORIES OF PARTICIPANTS
Category A: INDIVIDUAL
Every entrant will be ranked. In addition to the general ranking, there will be placing for first, second and third female and male.

Category B: TEAM
A team is made up of a maximum of three runners. To qualify for ranking, all three members of the team must complete the race. However, each member is recorded as an individual in the general ranking and qualifies for individual ranking.

ART. 8: TECHNICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE VERIFICATIONS
Participants must present themselves to the race administrators during registration ( see Art. 7 ). Participants must meet the administrative and technical requirements. Each competitor is responsible for his/her own equipment, and each element referring to the participant equipment list is strictly personal.

ART. 9: IDENTIFICATION MARKS/RACE NUMBERS
During the administrative registration, the organization will provide each participant with two dorsals: one for the chest or thigh and one for the back (to be attached to the backpack). Each participant must ensure his / her ID marking is clear, entirely visible, in good condition, and in the proper place throughout the race. The organization will make spare ID markings available in the event of loss or damage and for the identification of bags being brought forward for the 80km/160km participants.

ART. 10: SPACE RESERVED FOR INDIVIDUAL SPONSORS
In addition to official ID markings, participants may use other available clothing space for individual sponsors ( apart from areas exclusively reserved for race number ) e.g. T-shirts, shorts, socks, caps, backpacks, etc. However, the organization reserves the right to prohibit sponsorship considered to be oversized or in direct competition with the organization’s partners or for any other reasons and which the organization does not have to justify.

ART. 11: CHECKPOINTS AND RANKING
Each checkpoint is compulsory. Checkpoints are located throughout the course of each stage of the race approximately 9 – 12km apart. There are three to eight checkpoints depending on the length of the event entered and each competitor must pass through them. This allows the race officials to record times and distribute water. 1.5 litres of water will be available at every checkpoint and also at the start and finish of each stage.

Electronic timing equipment is used to identify, time, and rank each competitor. Each competitor’s time is indicated in hours, minutes and seconds.

ART. 12: MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
A medical team will be present throughout the race with the use of assistance vehicles. They will ensure that any participant suffering from physical or mental exhaustion is brought back to the base camp, taken to hospital, or removed from the race at the discretion of the Race Doctor. The Race Doctor may remove ID plates to dismiss any participant they feel physically unfit to continue the race and/or to receive vital medical care. Competitors are required to carry their own personal remedy materials including blister kits, Paracetamol, and anti-diarrhea medication, personal hygiene, allergy medication etc.

ART. 13: DROPPING OUT / ELIMINATION
In no circumstance ( and at the risk of having to pay the search costs involved ) may any competitor leave the race without informing the organization and signing an official discharge provided by TEAM AXARSPORT s.l. If a competitor abandons the race, he / she must notify the organization as soon as possible and give his / her identification marks and timing chip to one of the course commissaries and must be escorted to the stage finish by vehicle of qualified Race Staff or Race Director. If a member of a team drops out, the remaining team members will run as individuals. A runner is only qualified to rank in the race they registered. A runner entered in the 160km may drop to 80km/54km but is not qualified to rank in that race. A runner entered in the 80km may drop to the 54km, but is not qualified to rank in that race.


ART. 14: INSURANCE
All competitors take part in the full knowledge of the risks that may be incurred in this kind of competition. Since competitors participate of their own free will, the organization is not responsible for any collapse or accident. In accordance with the 1984 law on sport, the organizer is obliged to advise participants to take out their own accident, travel and death insurance. Proof of personal insurance is mandatory. Team Axarsport s.l. provides accident insurance for a fee of €20.

ART. 15: WEATHER AND TERRAIN CONDITIONS
Average temperatures in October:

The routes cover a wide variety of terrain. The organizers reserve the right to modify the route as a result of unfavorable weather conditions or unforeseen changes in certain areas.

ART. 16: MARKINGS
The participants in the 2nd ULTIMA FRONTERA 160 must follow the route as marked by the organizers. The course will be marked approximately every 200 – 500 meters. Official 2012 race markings will be demonstrated at orientation. Race administration strongly advises participants to study the route map and download the Garmin route from the website prior to 19 October, 2012. The organization takes care to use marking materials that are not harmful to the environment and that are removed after the race.

ART. 17: ROUTE MAP
A route map is issued at registration. You are required to have your map during the race. Back-up copies of the map available at check points. It is advisable to bring a plastic ziploc bag or comparable to protect the map on route.

ART. 18: OBLIGATORY EQUIPMENT FOR PARTICIPANTS
Food:
Each entrant must provide his/her own special supplements /dehydrated food / gels / bars that can be stored at the Sports Hall and/or carried forward in the race bag to the Montefrio checkpoint. He/she must select the type of food best suited to his/her personal needs ( recommendations and food supplies can be obtained by the Race Organizers in advance ). Boiling water will be provided at the Sports Hall and Montefrio checkpoint. Complimentary pasta (or equivalent) services at designated stops and times ( see Race Itinerary ). Check points will have sliced bananas, apples, chips, water, and cups of cola, but should not be considered the only source of nourishment depending on each runner's personal needs.

ART. 19: RACE BEHAVIOR AND THE ENVIRONMENT
We rely heavily on the support of the towns, villages, various tourist information departments and Regional Government and ask that all competitors treat the local people and the environment with respect. Interaction between the village inhabitants and competitors is important for the race and is a good example of how sports tourism can benefit a region. Smoking of any kind and the throwing away of any food/water packaging or other items on the race route is strictly forbidden.

ART. 20: COMPLAINTS
All complaints from competitors must be addressed with discretion to the Race Director in writing, and after the race to the Race Organizers at info@axarsport.com. Replies issued within 24 hours.

ART. 21: PHOTO AND VIDEO COVERAGE
TEAM AXARSPORT s.l. reserves all exclusive rights for photo and video coverage of the ULTIMA FRONTERA 160. Participants must agree that TEAM AXARSPORT s.l. may have exclusive use of their identity and individual or collective pictures for anything related directly or indirectly to their participation in the ULTIMA FRONTERA 160. Any still camera, video or movie coverage done during the ULTIMA FRONTERA 160 cannot be used by participants, their entourage or trainers for any use other than personal, unless by prior authorization or accreditation from TEAM AXARSPORT s.l. As a result, any book or film (short, feature) project must obtain TEAM AXARSPORT s.l.’s prior authorization.

Awards will be made within reasonable time of each event finish.
54km, 80km, 160km: Trophies for top 3 male / female and 1st team.
Completion of the 54km = Race Certificate, Finisher Medal, Technical Shirt.
Completion of the 80km = Race Certificate, Finisher Medal, Technical Shirt + 2 pts. towards the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc ( UTMB ).
Completion of the 160km = Race Certificate, Finisher Medal, Technical Shirt + 2 pts. towards the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc ( UTMB ).
